Here are 7 Old Testament passages that Christians often say describe the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ centuries before it happened. These passages come from the Tanakh, written long before the events recorded in the New Testament.

1. Psalm 22 – Pierced Hands and Feet

Prophecy:

  • Psalm 22

“They pierced my hands and my feet.”

It also says:

“They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”

Fulfillment recorded in:

  • Gospel of John 19:23–24

Roman soldiers cast lots for the clothing of Jesus Christ during the crucifixion.

This psalm was written by David about 1000 years before Jesus.

2. Isaiah 53 – The Suffering Servant

Prophecy:

  • Book of Isaiah 53

Key lines include:

“He was pierced for our transgressions.”
“By his wounds we are healed.”

Christians believe this describes the sacrificial suffering of Jesus Christ.

3. Zechariah 12:10 – The One Who Was Pierced

Prophecy:

  • Book of Zechariah 12:10

“They will look on me, the one they have pierced.”

Christians connect this with the crucifixion described in the Gospel of John.

4. Zechariah 11:12 – Betrayed for 30 Pieces of Silver

Prophecy:

  • Book of Zechariah 11:12

“They paid me thirty pieces of silver.”

Fulfillment:

  • Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ for 30 silver coins (recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 26:15).

5. Isaiah 50:6 – Beaten and Spat Upon

Prophecy:

  • Book of Isaiah 50:6

“I gave my back to those who beat me… I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.”

The New Testament records that Jesus Christ was beaten and mocked before crucifixion.

6. Psalm 69 – Given Vinegar to Drink

Prophecy:

  • Psalm 69 21

“They gave me vinegar for my thirst.”

Fulfillment:

During the crucifixion, Jesus Christ was offered sour wine according to the Gospel of John 19:29.

7. Isaiah 53:9 – Buried With the Rich

Prophecy:

  • Book of Isaiah 53:9

“He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death.”

Fulfillment:

After the crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man, placed Jesus Christ in his own tomb.

Summary

Christians believe these passages from the Tanakh describe key details of the crucifixion:

  • Pierced hands and feet

  • Betrayal for 30 silver coins

  • Mocking and beating

  • Vinegar given during suffering

  • Burial in a rich man’s tomb

They believe all these were fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Meanwhile, Judaism interprets many of these passages differently and does not see them as predictions of Jesus.
